The best time and weather to take pictures

There is a common misconception when it comes to the best weather and time to take pictures. Often my couples tend to believe that the sunnier and brighter it is outside, the better the pictures will be. However – this couldn’t be further from the truth. During the middle of the day is when the sun is the brightest – and as a result, creates very harsh lighting and shadows on the subject. Have you ever been outside and found it hard to open your eyes due to the sun? Ever think when this usually tends to happen? Now that’s not to say that photoshoots can’t be done mid-day, with today’s technology and advancements in the photography world, anything is possible – however, this is not the most ideal time for obvious reasons. It makes it hard to keep your eyes open in areas where there is no shade, and it creates a very harsh lighting on the face.

The best timings I recommend to my clients are either within 2 hours after sunrise or within 2 hours before sunset. This is when the sun isn’t at a high point and is positioned in a way that makes it easy to reflect light if needed as well. During this time sun light is not as harsh either. Often clients go for “golden hour” which is the exact hour before sunset if they like really golden or warm style pictures.

My favourite day/weather to take pictures is actually during cloudy days as it makes it very easy on us photographers. Consistent lighting all throughout, no shadows, no harsh lighting.
